Dr Hance, vice-consul britannique a
so rapporte à l’lris tectorum de Maxi-
mowicz, qui croit sauvage dans les
champs de Yokohama, au Japon, et que
les Japonais cultivent d'ailleurs comme
plante d'ornement.

The Garden: an illustrated weekly journal of gardening in all its branches.

GARDEN FLORA.
PLATE 1086.
IRIS DOUGLASIANA AND I. TECTORUM.
(WITH A COLOURED PLATE.*)
I. DOUGLASIANA is among the most distinct and
beautiful of all the Beardless Irises, many of
which have been described in a recent number
of The Garden (vol. 50, p. 180). The plant, of
which Mr. Moon has given us a most remarkably
faithful and excellent portrait, is of vigorous
growth, and has long dark green linear
leaves, which remain fresh and persistent
during the whole winter. I have, however,
under the same name a remarkable Iris which
is entirely distinct both in habit and bloom from
the plant here figured. It has dwarf and somewhat
scanty foliage, while the root-stock is what
would, I believe, be called "wide-creeping;"
the flowers, too, are borne on shorter stalks
and are somewhat larger, the falls spreading
horizontally, while the colour of the petals, except
for the purple or claret-coloured markings
at the base, is yellowish white or ochroleucous,
answering, indeed, somewhat to a description
I think I have seen somewhere of that
and difficult to grow species, I. bracteata. I
have had this plant under the same name from
more than one source, but my present plant came
from Mr. Smith, of Newry, who tells me, judging
from the date at which it was sent to me,
that he thinks it may have been collected considerably
further south than the better-known
habitats of the typical I. Douglasiana here
figured. It may not improbably be I. Beechyclassed
by Mr. Baker as a variety of this
species.
The other beautiful Iris (I. tectorum) here
figured was sent by Dr. Hance from Japan to
Mr. Bull, of Chelsea, in 1872. As will be seen
by the plate, it has broad, pale green leaves
and moderately large, elegantly-coloured flowers.
The falls are above an inch in breadth, crimped
at the edge, marked with deep lilac veins on a
paler lilac ground, the standards rather shorter
than the falls, plain lilac. It was figured in the
Botanical Magazine (tab. 6118). This Iris I
cannot grow, a remark which, I regret to say,
applies to almost every Iris of the Evansia
type, including the N. American species, I.
cristata.                       J. C. L.*

イチハツ (20) 西欧植物誌-露,英 レーゲル “Gartenflora”,カーチス “Botanical Magazine”, ブル父子育苗園 “Retail list / New Beautiful & Rare Plants Offered By William Bull”, ベイカー “The Gardeners' Chronicle”

Iris tectorum

Although the plant here figured came from Whampoa in
China, where it was cultivated by Dr. Hance, Her Britannic
Majesty's Vice-Consul at that port, there can be no question
but that it is the Japanese Iris tectorum of Maximovicz, which
grows in fields about Yokohama in Japan, and is likewise
cultivated by the Japanese. It differs from Maximovicz's
description, but not from native specimens, in having three
spathes, which are acute or acuminate-characters which
(with some others of foliage that are very variable) induced
Dr. Hance* to publish it as a new species, under the name of
tomiolopha, in allusion to its cut crest. On the other hand it
differs from Dr. Hance's description in the spreading inner
perianth-segments, a character probably due to cultivation,
as it occurs in the splendid Iris Kampferi var. Hendersoni,
lately exhibited in the Royal Horticultural Society by
Messrs. Henderson, and which is unquestionably a form of
I. lævigata, with a spreading perianth. With the North
American I. cristata, to which it was referred by the late
Professor Miquel, it has no near affinity, but it has with the
Himalyan I. decora, Wall., of Nepal.
I am indebted to Mr. Bull** for the specimen here figured,
which was raised from seeds sent by Dr. Hance* from his
garden in Whampoa, and which flowered in April, 1874.

DESCR. Rootstock creeping, tuberous, annulate. Leaves
about a foot long, by three-quarters to one and a quarter
inches broad, ensiform, scarcely glaucous. Scape nearly terete,
about as long as the leaves. Flowers three to four inches in
diameter. Spathes three, herbaceous, green, erect, longer than
the perianth-tube, acute. Pedicel about as long as the ovary.
Perianth-tube one inch long ; outer segments one and a half
inches broad, obovate, margin crisped and waved, pale lilac
streaked with violet ; claw half as long as the limb, white ;
crest running up the claw and half the limb, half an inch deep,
white and lilac, deeply laciniate ; inner segments rather
narrower than the outer, spreading, pale lilac, claw short.
Stigmas half as long as the perianth-segments recurved, lilac,
segments coarsely toothed. - J. D. H.***

VI. -NEW SERIES.

lengthening out into stolons as in the other species of
this section. Leaves three or four in a basal tuft, ensiform,
pale green, above a foot long, 12—15 lines broad
at the middle, thin in texture, narrowed gradually to an
acute point. Stem above a foot high, with a large leaf
at the middle and a single terminal 2—3 flowered
spathe of three lanceolate almost membranous valves,
1(1/2)—2 inches long. Pedicel and cylindrical ovary each
about 4 inch long ; tube above an inch long ; limb
1(1/2)—2 inches deep, bright lilac ; falls above an inch broad,
very obtuse, crisped at the edge, marked with deep lilac
veins on a paler lilac groundwork, narrowed cuneately
into a claw half as long as the limb, which is variegated
with lilac streaks on a white ground, the deeply
laciniated white and lilac crest half an inch deep,
running up the claw and half the limb ; standards
spreading, rather shorter than the falls, withan orbicular
plain lilac limb and a rather sudden claw. Stigmas,
including the recurved toothed deltoid crests, i inch
long. Anthers yellow, 1/2 inch long,

A native of Japan, and perhaps also of China. We
have at Kew wild specimens gathered near Yokohama
by Dr. Maximowicz. It is one of the finest of
all the Irises (see fig. 11), and no doubt when better
known will be universally popular. Living plants were
sent by Dr. Hance to Mr. Bull, from one of which, in
April, 1874, Mr. Fitch's drawing was made for The
Botanical Magazine, and this present description was
taken, and it has flowered well in an open border at
Kew this present June.
This concludes the series of the crested species. Besides
Salisbury's name of Evansia, this section has
been called Isis by Trattinick, Crossiris by Spach,
and Cristairis by Klatt. J. G. Baker.
