ジャガイモ（2/6） John Gerarde, John Parkinson

Solanum tuberosumジャガイモが移入されてきた時代，エリザベス１世の治めていた英国には，文芸の巨人シェークスピアとミルトンと同様に，有名な二人の植物学の巨人がいた．John Gerarde (1545-1612) と John Parkinson (1567-1650) の二人で，それぞれ ”The herbal, or, General Historie of plantes 『本草あるいは一般の植物誌』” (1597) と “Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris (Park-in-Sun's) 『日当たりの良い楽園・地上の楽園』” (1629) の名著を残している．この時代の英国は，世界に進出する海洋国として，貿易や海賊でスペインやポルトガルを圧倒し，世界各地の産物を集め，研究することが出来た．また本草学の最盛期であり，花の美しさを楽しむ余裕が出てきた園芸のルネッサンスでもあった．

John Gerarde の”The herbal” で potato の項目を見てみると，２種のポテトが記述され，その図や記述の内容から， Potato は sweet potato サツマイモであり， Virginia potato がジャガイモであることが分かる．ジャガイモは英国には Sir Walter Raleigh が派遣した北米移民がヴァージニアからもたらしたので，Virginia の冠が着いたのであろう．テキストにはジャガイモの草姿，柔らかい茎を持っていてクレソンに似た葉の形をしているなどとあり，花についても，” very faire and pleasant floures” が咲き，その色が薄紫で五弁，合弁であること，また雄しべ・雌しべの色についても，絵画的に詳しく記している．

From the bosome of which leaves come forth long round slender foot stalkes, whereon grew very faire and pleasant floures, made of one entire whole leafe, which is folded or plaited in such strange sort, that it seems to be a floure made of five sundry small leaves, which cannot easily be perceived, except the same be pulled open The whole floure is of a light purple colour, striped downe the middle of every fold or welt with a light show of yellownesse, as if purple and yellow were mixed together. In the middle of the floure thrusteth forth a thicke flat point all yellow as gold, twith a small sharpe green pricke or point in the midst thereof.

一方，John Parkinson の方は，ジャガイモの花についてはGeraldの時代より多くの種が入ってきていたためか，著者が観賞用植物として注目していたためか，花弁の色が様々あることを述べている．

The flowers growe many together upon a long stalke, coming forth from between the leaves and the great stalkes, every one severally upon a short foot-stalke, somewhat like the flower of Tabacco for the forme, being one whole leafe fix cornered at the brimmes, but somewhat larger, and of a pale blewish purple colour, or pale dove colour, and in some almost white, which some red threads in the middle, standing about a thicke gold yellow pointell, tipped with green at the end;

更に，"Paradisi in Sole" には第三のポテト， "Potatoes of Canada" が記載されているが，これは図や記述，ならびに "Jerusalem Artichoke” の別名から「キクイモ」であり，当時は地下部が大きくて食べられる外来植物はみな，Potato の類と呼んでいたらしい．単に Potato はサツマイモで，ジャガイモはそれと区別するために原産地と考えられていた場所の名を取って “Potatoes of Virginia”といわれていた．

この時代，ジャガイモは根茎が食用になることは分かっていたが，むしろ花に注目されていて，欧州では庭園で栽培され根茎は富裕層が珍しがって食べる珍味の域を出なかった．そのジャガイモが，貧困層の穀類に替わる主食として西欧に普及する契機は，飢餓や戦争にあった．
