Lysimachia vulgaris
Neuwe Kreuterbuch

Lysimachia vulgaris

前記事に続いて,ジョン・ジェラード(John Gerard aka John Gerarde, 1545 – 1611 or 1612)の『本草あるいは一般の植物誌 “The herbal, or, General Historie of plantes”』1597 版の “Of Willow-herbe, or Loose-strife.”

“Of Willow-herbe, or Loose-strife. Chap. 122  (2/2)
* The kindes
既述
7. Lysimachia campesiris, Wilde Willowe herbe
8. Lysimachia syluarica, Wood Willowe herbe

* The description. (2/2)
6.  We have likewise another Willowe herbe that groweth neere unto the brinkes of rivers and water courses. This I found in a waterie lane leading from the Lord Treasures house called Thibals unto the backside of his slaughter house; and in other places as shall be declared hereafter: which L’Obelius hath called Lysimachia galericulata, or hooded Willowe herve. It hath many smal tender stalks trailing upon the grounde, beset with divers leaves, somewhat snipt about the edges, of a deepe greene colour like unto the leaves of Scordium, or water Germander: among which are placed sundrie small blew flowers, fashioned like little hoode, in shape resembling those of Alehoove. The root is small and fibrous, dispersing it selfe under the earth far abroad, wherby it greatly increaseth.

* Water germander (Teucrium scordium)
* Alehoove, Ale-hoof: Ground Ivy, Glechoma hederacea, 和産カキドオシ(シソ科,カキドオシ属)の基本種.古代から Ale の苦味付けや眼病の治療に用いた.
Ale-hoof: Ground Ivy

7.  The wilde Willowe herbe hath fraile and verie brittle stalkes, slender, and of the height of a cubite, sometimes higher: whereupon do grow sharpe pointed leaves somewhat snipt about the edges, set togither by couple. There come foorth at the first long slender coddes, wherein is conteined small seede, wrapped in a cottonie or downie wooll, that is carried awaie with the winde when the seed is ripe; at the end of which commeth footh a small flower of a purplish colour, whereupon it was called Filius ante Patrem, because the flower doth not appeere until the cod be filled with his seed: but there is another sonne before the father, as hath beene declared in the chapter of meadowe Saffron. The roote is small and threddie.

8  The woode Willow herbe hath a slender stalkes divided into other smaller braunches, whreon are set long leaves, rough and sharpe pointed, of an overworne greene colour. The flowers growe at the tops of the braunches, consisting of fower or five small leaves, of pale purplish colour tending to whitenes, after which come long cods, wherein are little seeds wrapped in a certaine white downe, that is caried away with the winde. The roote is threddie.

*The Place  (2/2)

*The time
These herbes flower in June and July, and oftentimes until August.

*The Names
Lysimachia, is as Dioscorides and Plinie doe write, tooke his name of a special vertue that it hath in appeasing the strife and unrulinesse which falleth out among oxen at the plough, if it be put about their yokes; but it rather retaineth and keepeth the name Lysimchia, of King Lysimachus the Sonne of Agathocles, the first finder out of the nature and vertues of this herbe, as Plinie saith: which retaineth the name of him unto this day, and is made famous of Erasistratus in his 25. book chap. 7. Ruellius writeth, that is called in French Cornelle and Corneloa; In Greeke λυσιµάχιον: of the Latines Lysimachium: of Plinie Lysimachia: of the later writes Salicaria: in high Dutch Wederick: in English Willow herbe, or herbe Willow, and Loose strife.
Chamanerium is called of Gesnerus Epilobion. in English Bay Willow, or Bay Willow herbe.
高地オランダ語では “Wederick”,英語では “Willow herbe, or herbe Willow, and Loose strife” と呼ばれる.

* The Vertues
A  The juice according to Dioscorides, is good against the bloodie fixe, being taken either by potion or glister.
B  It is excellent good for greene wounds, and stancheth the blood: being also put into the nostrils, it stoppeth the bleeding at the nose.
C  The smoke of the burned herbe driveth away serpents, and killeth flies and gnats in a house; which Plinie speaketh of in his 25. booke, chap. 8. Snakes saith he, craull away at the smell of Loose srife. The same author affirmeth in his 26. booke, last chap. that it dieth haire yellow; which is not very unlike to be done by reason the floures are yellow.
D  The others have not beene experimented, wherefore until some matter worthy the noting, doth offer it selfe unto our consideration, I will omit further to discourse hereof.
E  The juice of yellow Lysimachia taken inwardly, stoppeth all fluxe of blood, and the Dysenteria or bloodie flixe.
F  The juice put into the nose, stoppeth the bleeding of the same, and the bleeding of wounds, and mightly closeth and healeth them, being made into an unguent or salve.
G  The same taken in a mother suppositorie of woole or cotton, bound up with threds (as the maner thereof is very well knoent to women) staieth the inordinate fluxe of overmuch flowing of women termes.
H  It is reported, that the fume or smoke of the herbe burned, doth drive away flies and gnats, and all maner of venemous beasts.

Lysimachia vulgaris

BHL / MOBOT
ジョン・ジェラード(John Gerard aka John Gerarde, 1545 – 1611 or 1612)は,彼を有名にした『本草あるいは一般の植物誌 “The herbal, or, General Historie of plantes”』を 1597 年に出版したが,その大部分は,ドドネウスの最後の著書『ペンブターデス植物誌 “Stirpium historiae pemptades sex”』(1583) を,英国の College of Physicians の会員である Dr. Priest が英訳したものから,死後何の断わりもなく引用している(文末の注 参照).

以下に二つに分けて 1597 版の “Of Willow-herbe, or Loose-strife.”

 “Gerald 『本草あるいは一般の植物誌 “The herbal, or, General Historie of plantes”』(1597)

“Of Willow-herbe, or Loose-strife. Chap. 122  (1/2)
* The kindes
Dioscorides and other old writers knew but one herbe Willow, which was with the yellow flower. The later age hath added three, which are bastarde kindes; two of a purple, and the third of a blew flower. Since wee have discovered divers sorts more, one of them having leaves like the water Willow, or Osier, which shall be set forth; the rest we will leave to a second edition, or a further consideration.”

* The description. (1/2)
1  The first kinde of Willow herbe hath long and narrow leaves of a grayish green colour, in shape like the Willow or Sallow leaves, standing three or fower one against another round about the stalke, which toward the top divideth it selfe into many other branches: on the tops whereof grow tufts of yellow flowers without smell: which being past, there commeth forth seed like Coriander. The root is long and slender.
BHL/MOBOT

2  The second kinde of Willow herbe in stalkes and leaves is like the former, saving that his leaves are not so broad. The flowers growe along the stakes toward the top spike fashion, of a faire purple colour; which being withered, doe growe into downe that is carried way with the winde.

3  This Lysimachia being the thirde in number, hath leaves and stalkes like the former. The flower growth at the top of the stalke, coming out of the ende of a small long codde, of a purple colour, in shape like the stocke Gilloflower: and is called of many Filius ante Patrem, that is, the sonne before the father, because that the codded commeth foorth first having seedes therin, before the flower doth shewe it selfe abroade, which is of a purple colour like Geranium called Doves foote.

W. Curtis, Flora Londinensis
(1784-1788) Plant Illustration
4  The foutrh being thought by Dodonues to be a bastard kinde, is (as I do esteeme it) of all the rest the most goodly and stately plant, having leaves like the greatest Willow or Ozier. The branches come out of the ground in great numbers, growing to the height of sixe foot, garnished with brave floures of great beauty, consisting of fower leaves a piece, of an orient purple colour, having some thrums in the middle of a yellow colour. The cod is long like the last spoken of, and full of downie matter, which flieth away with the winde when the cod is opened.

5. There is another bastarde Loosestrife, or Willowe herbe, having stalkes like the other of his kinde, whereon are place long leaves snipt about the edges, in shape like the great Veronica, or herbe Fluellen. The flowers growe along the stalkes spiked fashion, of like unto Lavender, of a blewe colour; after which succeede small cods or pouches. The roote is small and fibrous. It may be called Lysimachia Caerulea, or blewe Willow herbe.

1.  Lysimachia lutea Yellow Willow herbe. 386. Lysimachia vulgaris, L. (セイヨウクサレダマ)
2.  L. spicata Spiked Willow herbe. 386,2, fig. Lythrum Salicaria, L. (エゾミソハギ)
3.  L. silicuosa Codded Willow herbe. 386, 3. Epilobium hirsutum, L. (オオアカバナ)
4.  Chamoenerium Willow herbe with flowers like the Rose Bay. 386, 4. Ger. em. 497, 7. Epilobium angustifolium, L. (ヤナギラン)

Veronica spicata
L. Flora Danica  (1761-1883)
5.  L. flore coeruleo Blew Willow herbe. 387, 5, no fig. Ger. em. 477, 9.

*The Place  (1/2)
 The yellow Lysimachia groweth plentifully in moist medowes, especially along the medowes as you go from Lambeth to Battersey neer London, and in many other places throughout England.
 The second groweth in places of great moisture, yea almost in the running streames, and standing water, or harde* by them. It growth under the Bishops house wall at Lambeth, neere the water of Thames, and in moist diches in most places of England.
 The third growth neere waters (but not in the waters) in all places for the most part.
 The fourth groweth in Yorkshire in a place called the Hooke, neere unto a close called a Cow pasture; from whence I had these plants, which do grow in my garden very goodly to behold, for the decking up of houses and gardens.
 The fift growth hard by the Thames, as ye go from a place called the Divels Neckerchiefe to Redreffe, neere unto a stile that standeth in your way upon the Thames banke, among the plankes that do hold up the same banke. It growth also in a ditch side not farre from the place of cxecution, called Saint Thomas Waterings.

Alice M Coats "Flowers and their histories” (1956, Billing & Sons), p 316 には"; for the greater part of the material for his famous Herball and Histories of Plantes (1597) was taken without acknowledgement from a translation by deceased Dr. Priest of Dodoens's final work, the Pemptades of 1583."

Lysimachia vulgaris
Bessler, Basilius, Hortus Eystettensis, vol. 2 1613

★ウィリアム・ターナー (William Turner ,1520-1568) 『新本草書 A new Herball 』(1551~1568).
彼の “A new herball, vol II” (1562) には,
“ Of Lysimachia
Lysimachia putteth forth stalks of the length of a cubit or some time longer, bushy, small, & the leaves com out at the knees or knots or joints of the herb. They are thinne, & in fasshion lyke wylow leaves, & in taste byndyng. The flower is dark rede or of the colour of golde. It growth in watery & in marrishe & fennish groundes. Thys is a very comen herb in Germany & England; I mervell that Matthiolus could not fynd it in Italy until it was sent hym from Rome by Vincent Canton to Goritia. But although it be found in mani places in England, yet I coulde never learne any English name of it. It may be called after the etimologi of the worde, & also of the virtue that it hath, lous strife, or it may be called herbe willow. The Duche men call it weyderich.

The virture of Lousstrife
The juice of the leaves by ther bynding poure stoppeth the castyng out the blood. It is ether to be poured in or to be taken inward for the blody flyx. If it be put in a mother suppository, it will stop the excessive runnyng or issue of the mother. If ye stop your nose with thys herb, it will stop the runnyng out of blood of it. It stayeth also the excessive running out of blood out of woundes. It dryveth away serpentes & killeth flies with his smoke, for it is wonders sharpe in smell. There is an other Lysimachia besyd it that I have spoken of with redish purple floure, that groweth much about water sydes with an head like an ear; But I read of no other properti that it shoulde have then it which hath the yellow or golden floures.”

彼の ”A niewe Herball” には,

** Sonne before the father:「父より先に息子」の意味で,花が葉の展開より先に開く植物,例えばフキタンポポ(coltsfoot)やイヌサフラン(naked lady)を云うのが一般的だが,この植物では,蕾が長く伸びた子房の先について,種がなってから花が咲くと考えたことから云ったらしい(次記事参照).
