Ipomoea purpurea
*Alice M Coats, “Flowers and their histories”(1956)

Bryonia nigra
“JOHN GOODYER  p153-154
Convolvulus coeruleus       7 Sept. 1621
flos Noctis. non script.
Hath manie small weake round hairie browne redd branches, growinge from one root, windinge wrappinge and turninge them selves against the sunne, round sticks or poles that are sett by them for that purpose: whereon by certaine distances growe greate broad leaves, in a manner round, yet picked at the toppe, without anie corners like Ivie leaves, verie like those of Bryonia nigra (←) but rounder, somewhat rough above and smooth underneath. Forth of the bosomes of the leaves growe longe slender hairie footstalks, on the toppe whereof growe 2 or 3 most beutifull flowers, not flowringe all at a time but one after another, those that will open in the morninge make some small shewe overnight, onlie wound together, and not of half their growth, erlie in the morninge they appeare in their full lenght, but joyned close together with 5 corners, which after in a short time open and are round like a little bell, like those of white Bindweed (↓), but of a delicate Azure or as it were a color of blewe and redd mixed together, with five straight strakes or lynes in the inside like redd darke colored crimson velvet. This glorious Shewe continueth but awhile, for towards night the same daie that they open, they beginn to vade and fold themselves in together at the toppe, and never open againe, and the next daie fall quite away. Quaere, whether they do always so. MS. f. no.

Bindweed

1. Convolvulus caeruleus major rotundifolius
BHL/MoBot
“ I. Convolvulus caeruleus major rotundifolius.
The greater blew Bindweede, or Bell-flower with round leaves.
This goodly plant rifeth up with many long and winding branches, whereby it climbeth and windeth upon any poles, herbes, or trees, that stand neare it within a great compasse, alwaies winding it selfe contrary to the course of the Sunne : on these branches doe growe many faire great round leaves, and pointed at the end, like unto a Violet leafe in shape, but much greater, of a sad greene colour : at the joynts of the branches, where the leaves are set, come forth flowers on pretty long stalkes, two or three together at a place, which are long, and pointed almost like a finger, while they are buds, and not blowne open, and of a pale whitish blew colour, but being blowne open, are great and large bels, with broad open mouths or brims ending in fine corners, and small at the bottome, standing in small greene huskes of fine leaves : these flowers are of a very deepe azure or blew colour, tending to a purple, very glorious to behold, opening for the most part in the evening, abiding so all the night and the next morning, untill the Sunne begin to growe somewhat hot upon them, and then doe close, never opening more : the plant carrieth so many flowers, if it stand in a warme place, that it will be replenished plentifully, untill the cold ayres and evenings stay the luxury thereof : after the flowers are part, the stalkes whereon the flowers did stand, bend downwards, and beare within the huskes three or foure blacke seedes, of the bignesse of a Tare or thereabouts : the rootes are stringy, and perish every yeare.”

CHAP. 318. Of Blew Bindweed.
¶ The Description.
1 * BLew Bindweed bringeth forth long, tender, and winding branches, by which it climeth upon things that stand neere unto it, and foldeth it selfe about them with many turnings and windings, wrapping it selfe against the Sun, contrary to all other things whatsoever, that with their clasping tendrels do embrace things that stand neere unto them; - -

‡** 2 There are also kept in our gardens two other blew floured Bindweeds. The one a large and great plant, the other a lesser. The great sends up many large and long winding branches, like those of the last described, and a little hairie: the leaves are large and roundish, ending in a sharpe point: the floures are as large as those of the great Bindweed, and in shape like them, but blew of colour, with five broad purplish veines equally distant each from other: and these floures commonly grow three neere together upon three severall stalks some inch long, fastened to another stalke some handfull long: the cup which holds the floures, and afterwards becomes the seed vessell, is rough and hairie: the seed is blacke, and of the bignesse of a Tare: the root is stringie, and lasts no longer than to the perfecting of the seed. I have onely given the figure of the leafe and floure largely exprest, because for the root and manner of growing it resembles the last described.
