“strawberry” の語源が，わらを下に敷き詰めて実を保護して栽培するからと言うのは，この栽培法が比較的近代になってからなので，この語の古さから見て怪しい．イチゴのつるが地面をむやみに這いまわる（ to stray ）習性にからめて，stray の廃語になった過去分詞形に由来する．との事．
引っ越してきて直ぐに植えた．最初は優遇され，実のなるのを楽しみにされていたが，今は半分雑草扱い．白い花は冬の終わりから咲くが，実は結びにくい．春以降の赤い実を楽しむのは，ダンゴムシとヒヨドリ．たまに家内．
